About the Show: Passionate and fearless, Shange’s words reveal what it meant to be of color and female
in the twentieth century. Encompassing every feeling and experience a woman ever
had. Groundbreaking dramatic prose poem written in vivid and powerful language that
resonates with unusual beauty in its fierce message to the world.

In this choreopoem, the women are identified by colors rather than names. Each
represents different experiences of Black womanhood, trauma, love, resilience, and self-
discovery.
Together, the seven women create a collective portrait of Black women’s experiences —
love, rape, abortion, domestic violence, joy, dance, friendship, and healing. The
“rainbow” symbolizes unity and wholeness. By the end, they move toward affirmation,
famously declaring their self-love and survival.

Roles Available: All are women of color – any age

Lady in Yellow -Essence: Youth, curiosity, and awakening

Confident and expressive, the Lady in Purple often speaks boldly about desire and autonomy. She reflects the power of owning one’s sexuality while navigating betrayal and pain. Her energy is passionate and assertive.

Lady in Red – Essence: Anger and survival

Lady in Orange – Essence: Trauma and truth
The Lady in Orange shares one of the most devastating stories in the play involving domestic violence and unimaginable loss. She represents endurance through horror and the unbearable weight some women carry. Her narrative is one of grief but also testimony.
