Seussical Jr
at Theatre Arlington

What it's about: Some of your favorite characters from the beloved Dr. Seuss books come to life in this all-youth musical production. The Cat in the Hat serves as narrator of a story that centers on Horton the Elephant.

Why parents will like it: Theatre Arlington always puts on good, affordable shows for the entire family, and this production is no exception. Director Todd Hart has done an excellent job in coaching the 30 youth members, ages 9 to 17, both in on-stage and behind-the-scenes duties. When the ensemble comes together in perfect sync in numbers such as Oh, The Thinks You Can Think and Biggest Blame Fool, you can appreciate the hard work that Hart and the cast have put into this show. Of course, as an all-youth production, there are bound to be some mishaps along the way. As a parent, it's like watching a high school football game -- you know these are not professional players, but you can marvel at the budding talent before you. A few of the standout youth players include Caitlan Galloway whose maturity as Mayzie the bird was impressive, Hunter Martin as JoJo who hit all of the right notes, Joshua Dunk as Horton who brought the emotional crux of the story to light and Olivia Rooney as The Cat in the Hat whose comedic timing brought a chuckle to all. Many cast members have come through the Theater Camp that Theatre Arlington puts on every year and have also appeared in previous productions. So, don't be surprised if your child picks up the acting bug while watching this performance.

Why kids will like it: The dialog, story and songs will seem familiar to those who have grown up in Seussland. My 9-year-old son and his 10-year-old friend related to the Horton and JoJo characters and loved watching the three monkeys mess around (even when they weren't center stage).  The colorful and creative sets and costumes will keep your children captivated as well as the central theme of friendship and loyalty.

Good to know: Don't forget to get your programs signed and pictures taken with the cast members after the show. Bring small bills for drinks and snacks, which run about $1, at intermission. Also, all proceeds from the sales at the souvenir stand benefit Theatre Arlington.

Hit or miss? Definitely a hit for the entire family.
