Review: Theatre Arlington's 'Little Mermaid'

After reminding my kids for the umpteenth time that Theatre Arlington’s version of The Little Mermaid did not feature a singing crab or a talking seagull, my family spent last Saturday enjoying this delightful all-student production. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale – although without the author’s original ending – The Little Mermaid follows the familiar story of a mermaid, played by high school senior Michelle Lackey, who saves a prince, Arlington High freshman Graham Dudley, from drowning and falls in love with the landlubber. She makes a deal with the Sea Witch, wickedly portrayed by Lamar High junior Suzo Frazier, trading her voice for a pair of legs so she can be with her prince.
The Good: Theatre Arlington’s production features a simple, yet multi-functional set that provides the backdrop for the mermaid’s grotto and then converts to the beach in front of the prince’s palace. The lighting production for the Sea Witch’s lair is appropriately spooky but not too scary for my four-year-old. And although there was no singing, the production held my children’s attention and they easily understood what was going on.
The Bad: Unfortunately, Theatre Arlington’s charming 19-row auditorium is right next to the Union-Pacific railroad line that runs parallel to Division Street in Arlington. Twice during the production, the train horn was blowing, drowning out the performers. Also, the first act is a little too long for younger viewers, many who started squirming during the last two scenes before intermission.
Good to know: Remember that this is a student production. Having said that, the kids did a good job of keeping their fins flipping while underwater and there are some cleverly delivered comedic lines from supporting cast members Karon Chapa and Caleb White. There were several little girls in the audience dressed up as mermaids and the theater sells glittery mermaid crowns and pirate gear in case you forgot yours at home.
